 1   General Category / Biodiesel / B100 during the winter?  on: August 08, 2007, 11:12:23 AM

Does anybody run B100 during the winter?  What have you added to your vehicle (short of an Elsbett kit) to solve cold flow problems?  Would simply using a B50 mix work?

Also, would you recommend I replace the fuel filters?

BTW, I'd like to thank the group for my first tank of ASTM B99.  The car runs great, and the engine seems perceptibly quiter.

I'm so glad to see a group finally get B100 into Chi-town!  I helped start the Prairie Crossing biodiesel co-op up in Grayslake in part because I couldn't get biodiesel easily in the Chicagoland area when I lived in Lake County.

cheers,
Kyle

I see a few posts regarding the purchase of methanol, so I thought I'd post this for anybody in need of a source.

Hi, just wanted to let those of you looking for methanol know that I am a distributor for Sunoco Racing Alcohol (methanol) and can supply it for biodiesel production.

Details: $152 per sealed 55 gal barrel (plus $20 refundable drum deposit), or $140 each for 5 or more barrels.  I can also sell in 5 gallon increments for $15 each (you must supply the container).  At least 99.85% pure.  Must pick up in McHenry, IL (delivery may be available for $75).  If you have questions or to place an order, contact Dan at 815.557.6101 or Dano959_at_ameritech.net

We have an order of methanol coming in that we will make available to members.  Our tentative price is going to be about $3.25/gallon.  We will be working to help source chemicals, provide storage, and do bulk purchases to lower costs for everybody.

I'm picking up methanol while in Indy this weekend.  If any of you want in, its $5/gallon.  If enough people order a total of 20+ gallons, then I will purchase a full barrel which drops the price down to $4/gallon.  Email me with name and contact info, by friday.  You'll have to come pick it up from my place over on Lake shore drive and Lawrence on monday or tuesday.

While it would be great for us to get together and be able to 'broker' such trades, it could be very problematic for the individuals involved given the current legal gray area we fall into right now.  SB0267 is working to solve the legal and tax issues for personal brewers and users: http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/BillStatus.asp?DocNum=267&GAID=9&DocTypeID=SB&LegId=27787&SessionID=51
But the only applies for non-commercial use which means if you want to sell it (to a legal group like us or an individual) you need to have a blenders bond and remit taxes monthly.  I'm sure there will be a way to work it out on paper but it isn't something you want to go announcing to the public.

An algae man, good work.  It is hard to imagine all the possibilities there.  We are all ready for the warm weather around here.  We have been struggling the get started with our group but we do have a workspace now and we are finally getting our insurance on the first of the month.  I'm sure we will be meeting sometime in the first couple weeks of May.

Hey everyone!
I don't know about the rest of you, but I usually end up making too much in a batch.  But seeing as how its easier to make extra than to change the processor, I was wondering if anyone's thought about putting together a location where surplus BD could be sold.  Its just a thought, but is anybody else interested in the idea?
